Per data from Israel, at least 98 Palestinians have died during detention since October 2023. A rights monitoring body operating from Israel has indicated that the real figure is likely considerably higher, as a result of many of missing individuals from Gaza.

Civilian Deaths

“As long as these policies continue to be enforced, every Palestinian in confinement is in danger, including the those in good health, including the juveniles who have no medical issues.”

Prominent Examples

Some deaths in detention have been widely reported, for instance a 50-year-old hospital director who perished in detention after 120 days in confinement.

A prisoner incarcerated with the deceased stated that he was brought to the courtyard by guards immediately preceding his demise, clearly wounded and unclothed from the lower body. His remains has not been returned to Gaza.

Additional detainees who died in Israeli custody stay unnamed. Correctional authorities and defense forces provided researchers with the total of casualties in custody, and basic other details for example the site where they lost their lives, but without the inmates’ personal details.

Identification Challenges
