Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She added that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the experience, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised experts in various fields.

The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a Amazon founder.
